Which one would you use?

This is the kit we keep by the pool. Tap the one that would get them out. Best done together.

Round 1 of 3

Someone is in trouble in the water. They are close to the poolside, near enough to reach. What would you use?

Shout for help first, every single time.

What each one is for

A pull noodle

Long enough to reach someone who is close to the side, and stiff enough to pull them in with. You hold one end and stay well back.

A rope

For someone too far out to reach. You throw it to them and keep hold of your end, then pull them in.

A torpedo

You throw it and they hold on to it. It is also the one we take with us if we are already in the water, because we can swim back with a big gap between us.

A life ring

For someone too far out to reach. You throw it to them, they hold on to it, and you pull them in.

How we do it, for a grown-up

If they are close to the side

If someone is in trouble close to the poolside, within arm's reach, we use a pull noodle. We get down to the poolside, kneeling down, and stretch out with the pull noodle, making sure that we don't get too close to the person struggling in the water, because they could get hold of you and pull you into the pool. That is why you are low to the ground.

If they are out in the middle

If someone is in trouble and they're in the middle of the pool, this may need the use of either the torpedo, the life ring, or the rope. The important thing is that the person stays on the poolside. They then have to throw the equipment out to the person that's struggling, ask them to grasp onto it, and then slowly and reassuringly pull the person to the poolside.

If you are already in the water

Sometimes, when you get in the water, you use the torpedo, because you can throw the torpedo out to the person that's struggling in the water. You get them to grab hold of it and tell them how to hold it. Then you can swim back to shore or poolside with them still quite a way away from you, so that you are not in danger of being pulled under.
