A big gap the whole way back, so they can't pull you under.
All three. Knowing why is what lets you work out the next one on your own.
How we do it, for a grown-up
The three reasons, and that is all there are
How far away they are decides whether you reach or throw, and keeping a gap decides the rest. If someone is within arm's reach we use a pull noodle, kneeling down and staying back, because they could get hold of you and pull you into the pool. If they are out in the middle, the person stays on the poolside and throws the torpedo, the life ring or the rope. And if you are already in the water, you use the torpedo, because you can throw it out to them and then swim back with them still quite a way away from you, so that you are not in danger of being pulled under.
